How the ingredients penetrate? 

Penetrating process: When applying the product, the ingredients start to go from the epidermis to the dermis and hypodermis. Following the blood vessels to the circulatory system with the mission of circulating oxy, hormones, and the essential nutrients to our body. Just like that, skin cells are nurtured and more active in good condition!



Penetration routes: 

  • Transappendageal (a): Absorb through openings in the skin such as pores and follicles. 
  • Transcellular (b): This route is considered to be a difficult path for ingredient penetration as it involves navigating through multiple layers of cell membranes, which consist of both hydrophilic and lipophilic regions. Nevertheless, this route can be beneficial for ingredients that possess both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, allowing them to traverse through ‘strong barriers.’
  • Intercellular (c ): Absorb between the cells in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. Nevertheless, hair follicles and sweat glands cover only 0.1% of the total skin’s surface.

Factors that affect the ingredient's penetration 

  • Skin: 
    • Skin area: Skin is a multilayered biomembrane with particular absorption characteristics that respond differently to different substance classes. Since skin is a dynamic, living tissue, its absorption characteristics are susceptible to constant change. Therefore, the thinner skin on the face, neck, and around the eyes is absorbed better than other skin, like the soles of feet. 
    • The age of the skin is also crucial! Researchers show that the ingredients tend to be absorbed better with the skin of children and elderly people than young adults. One more research revealed that hydrated skin is more permeable than dry skin. 
    • Moreover, a higher skin temperature means better absorption capacity because it causes the blood vessels to widen and boosts cell activity. 
  • Skincare products: 
    • pH level: The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, and the neutral pH is 7. The skin tends to have a broad pH range, with acidity ranging between 4 and 7, which can reduce more free radicals, impact the different layers of the skin, and cause damage such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sagging skin. Yes, it’d better be with fewer free radicals. But try to choose a suitable one for your skin as it also leads to a “clown moment”: easy to get irritated!!!



  • 500 Daltons Rule: From research by a group of scientists in 2000: “Most compounds that must penetrate into/through the skin for pharmaceutical or cosmetic purposes must be of a molecular weight below 500 Da (Dalton)”. Specifically, compounds with a molecular weight greater than 500 Daltons are unlikely to be absorbed through the skin, particularly through the stratum corneum - the outermost layer of skin acts as a barrier to many substances.



The epidermis allows smaller molecules to pass through easily, while the stratum corneum’s water-repellent characteristic makes it a tough barrier for the water-soluble molecules, which leads to its penetration through the openings of sweat glands and follicles. 

As a result, to bypass the natural properties of the stratum corneum, the skin's barrier needs to be disrupted by using Ultrasound and High-voltage electrical pulses.
